Copper Canyon/Monitor Mesa/Painted Desert

Just 10 miles from Oljato Trading Post is Copper Canyon which leads to Monitor Mesa. A painted desert stands on the top of the mesa.

Copper Canyon starts near Paiute Farms, Utah, not far from Oljato Trading Post, and goes to Lake Powell. Through the canyon you can ride past dramatic rock formations and  the remains of old stone hogans. Follow the wild burro trails from Copper Canyon to the top of Monitor Mesa. Cross the mesa to views of Monument Valley. Ride up to beautifully colored desert sand formations and down the other side on the soft sandy trails. See all the way across the San Juan River to Valley of the Gods. Camp near Lake Powell if you like. Make this part of a multi-day ride.

Multi-Day Rides
Wetherill Mesa: View from the Top
View from the top of Wetherill Mesa. Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, scene of numerous John Ford westerns starring John Wayne, dramatically extends below Wetherill Mesa. Serene and uncrowded, the mesa can be part of a multi-day tour or can be the destination on an all-day ride from Agathla Peak past Mystery Valley's petroglyphs and Anasazi ruins.

Extremely "Off the Beaten Trail"

Navajo Country has spectacular scenery which can be viewed easily from your car window. But, some really special places can only be reached by horseback or hiking. Experienced riders will enjoy negotiating slickrock switchback trails down the side of a canyon wall to the stream-fed canyon bottom.

"Off the Beaten Trail"

Evelyn & Scout with Monument Valley in the distance.Navajo Country Guided Trail Rides finds locations for professional photographers, film makers, video artists, and magazine layouts. They guided the photographers and models to the Monument Valley locations seen in the March, 1998 issue of Cowboys and Indians Magazine. In one of the magazine photographs, a model is seen posing on  Scout. That particular photo was shot at Oljato Trading Post & Museum. So, you can be assured of being taken to the most scenic locations on your horseback tours. Evelyn Jensen is pictured here on Scout with the famous Mittens and buttes of Monument Valley in the distant background.

Rides Customized to Your Group's Interests

Mystery Valley ParadePrivate rides or group rides can be customized to your interests. Recently a large group of wagon enthusiasts from Colorado brought their equipment and horses to enjoy a few days in Mystery Valley. The group included outfitters and guest ranch operators. Their equipment included a genuine government issue Navajo wagon, the chuck wagon that appeared in City Slickers I, and a Basque sheepherder's wagon. There were mules, draft horses and a variety of trail horses. The roads and washes here are a perfect place for a group such as this.Basque Sheepherder's WagonMovie Wagon

Paiute MesaSunrises and sunsets paint different colors on the sandstone formations and across the sky. Part of the pleasure of the landscape is enjoying the changes each hour brings. A horseback tour is the best way to experience endless horizons on the Colorado Plateau of Utah and Arizona.

Navajo "Off the Beaten Trail" Treasures

Monument Valley and Mystery Valley contain some hidden treasures such as this unusual stone hogan. Navajo Country Guided Trail Rides can take private groups to such "off the beaten trail" places. They also find locations for professional photographers, video artists and other commercial customers. All can be assured of being taken to majestic scenic locations.
