Mystery Valley
Ride to Anasazi cliff dwellings tucked away in box canyons with petroglyphs and pictographs etched on the canyon walls. View natural arches created by millions of years of geologic forces. Learn about the ancient history of the Colorado Plateau and the unique modern Dineh' (Navajo) culture .

From Oljato Trading Post to Navajo Mountain to Rainbow Bridge
The labyrinth of canyons and mesas west of Oljato Trading Post offer adventures from a few hours to many days. Some of the trips require pre-planning and horse packing. Some of these rides are for experienced riders. The Rainbow Bridge trip can only be done at certain time of the year.

Monitor Mesa/Lake Powell/Copper Canyon/Paiute Farms
This area is west of the tribal park, about 20 miles from Oljato. Follow wild burro trails past painted deserts, around old mines, to the tops of mesas with views of where the San Juan River flows into Lake Powell, Meander down secluded canyons to the shores of Lake Powell for fishing or swimming.

Move camp as often as you like or ride daily from the same camp site.

"Overnights"

The most popular "overnight" is to Mystery Valley. The ride leaves about 4 hours before sunset from Agathla Peak. (3:30 p.m. or 4:00 p.m.) The ride to camp is 3 hours. The next morning it is a 3 hour ride back to Agathla Peak by a different trail. You arrive back usually before noon. Another "overnight" camps at Paiute Farms and rides the next day up Monitor Mesa, past the Whirlwind Mine to giant boulders covered with Anasazi petroglyphs overlooking Lake Powell.

Example for multi-day self contained, your own horses:

Day 1: arrive and set up camp at Agathla Peak, Day 2: Explore Mystery Valley , Day 3: Ride atop Hunt's Mesa to view all of Monument Valley, Day 4: Trailer horses to the tribal park and ride past the movie sites, move camp to Paiute Farms, Day 5: Explore Monitor Mesa as many days as you like.

Example for multi-day trip, our horses, vehicle support for camp:

Day 1: Ride from Oljato Trading Post to camp in Copper Canyon, Day 2: Explorations of Lake Powell, Day 3: Follow burro trails across Monitor Mesa through the painted desert to camp at Paiute Farms, Day 4: Trailer horses to Agathla Peak, ride to Mystery Valley camp, Day 5: Wetherill Mesa for views of all of Monument Valley from the top, Day 6: back to Agathla Peak.

Things to Know

1. Layered clothing, jeans, boots, and a hat or cap are best for riding. Panty hose help prevent chaffing. Padded bike shorts under jeans make for a comfortable ride.
2. The weather is beautiful here but varies. Be prepared for weather changes, bring rain gear.
3. Bring water, snacks, sun screen, chapstick.
4. For overnights, bring your own sleeping bag and tent. 4-wheel drive vehicles meet you at camp with the supplies.
5. Bring a fanny pack for camera, extra film, water bottle or canteen, snacks.
6. Bring lunch for ½ day rides or lunches are available upon prior request at $8.00 each.
7. Reservations, especially for overnight and multi-day rides, should be made in advance.

Be at the stables ½ hour prior to tour departure.
Camping equipment can be rented with advance notice.

Riding and touring on the Navajo Nation requires a guide. The local guides can also explain the history from Anasazi to present and share insights into Navajo culture.

The Navajo Nation is on Mountain/Daylight time from the middle of April until late October as they extend into 3 states. Therefore, their time is one hour later than the rest of Arizona during these months.
