Tour the Anasazi Newspaper Rocks above Lake Powell

A leisurely scenic ride up the old historic Whirlwind Mine Road leads you to the top of Monitor Mesa. Views to the east reveal the outline of the famous formations of Monument Valley. Whirlwind Mine Road

Far below the edge, the San Juan River flows into Lake Powell.

Crossing Monitor Mesa, the trail leads to a field of boulders covered with Anasazi petroglyphs, like an ancient website. The Anasazi who wrote these messages centuries ago lived in cliff dwellings at the bottom of the precipitous mesa walls, their homes now under the waters of Lake Powell.

The messages still have spiritual meaning to the descendants of the Anasazi.

Anasazi Newspaper Rocks

Continuing past the Anasazi Newspaper Rocks, more panoramic views of Lake Powell greet you.

Haskeninni

The trail becomes adventurous in places, nothing the well-trained Appaloosa from Navajo Country can't easily handle.

After descending Monitor Mesa into Copper Canyon, the remains of a Navajo stone hogan rest near a wonderful campsite for those on a multi-day trip. The colorful painted desert at the base of No Man's Mesa is in view beyond.

Burros

Wild burros roam the mesas above Lake Powell.
The burros have provided exquisite trails around No Man's Mesa.

Petrified Wood

Petrified wood lies where it fell millions of years ago.
Join Navajo Country for a tour of the ancient Anasazi Newspaper Boulder field on an overnight campout. If you want a multi-day adventure you can circle the burro trails around No Man's Mesa with camping in Copper Canyon and by the shores of Lake Powell.
